Providing Related Services Under IDEA during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond

Summary:

Related service providers in special services departments include healthcare professionals such as physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists. As special education staff we follow IDEA law and collaborate with IEP/IFSP teams. In this presentation we will introduce the guiding documents that the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and the Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center (ECTA)
have created to support our practice during the pandemic. Following discussion of our personal challenges and successes during the pandemic, we will open the conversation up to educational and healthcare professionals to discuss questions and concerns to best support our practice in educational settings .

Learning Objectives:

           1.           Describe three common themes in the novel aspects of providing related services during a pandemic

           2.           Compare provider-specific PT, OT and SLP professional organization guidance documents for reopening recommendations compared to current situation

           3.           Discuss practical considerations in delivering remote, hybrid and in-person for PT, OT and SLP services related to safety, equity and practice
